“Gabriel’s Garden” is a
children’s story book written and illustrated by Hayden Hooper of
Brownsville, Tennessee that is based on the true account of Russell and
Kati Walden and their attempt and ultimate success at creating a play
space for children of all abilities. The efforts of the Walden family
were a result of their own personal experience of attempting to include
their youngest family member, Gabriel, in recreational activities,
despite his disability. The book was written in an effort to have an educational tool to expose young children to the idea and understanding of “inclusion” among all people and also with the intent to not only “engage” the young reader in the story, but before it is over, find that they are “rooting” for the person experiencing a special need, rather than fearing them. “I wrote this book because I could not find another book on the market written for children about children dealing with these issues,” says Hooper. With plans to build a playground in her own community, Hooper strongly believes the key to its success is through the children. “They must understand that whether able or unable, they are a part of the success of these magical playgrounds. We must all do our part to help our neighbor in need in order for this to work.” |
